If you live in the northern Gold Coast, your closest tip is about to do a lot more. The City is spending $15 million to turn Pimpama’s recycling centre into a full-service waste centre.

What’s Actually Changed

The City’s 2026/27 budget includes a $15 million investment to upgrade the Pimpama Waste and Recycling Centre into what Mayor Tom Tate calls a “premium full-service site catering to all commercial and residential customers in all categories.” He says it’s an investment in the city’s growing northern corridors.

Right now, Pimpama only takes recycling and green organics. It does not accept general household rubbish or commercial waste. The upgrade is set to change that.

What This Means for You

Today, if your trailer has any general waste in it, Pimpama turns you away. The nearest centres that take general waste are Helensvale and Jacobs Well. For commercial or work waste, it’s Stapylton or Reedy Creek. That’s extra driving, extra fuel and extra time.

The northern suburbs are some of the fastest-growing on the coast, so a bigger local centre has been a long time coming. Once the upgrade lands, locals in Pimpama, Ormeau, Coomera and nearby should be able to drop the lot at one site close to home.

One thing that won’t change: from 1 July 2026, a $5 gate fee applies to any landfill load at Gold Coast waste centres. Recycling and green waste stay free. We broke that down in an earlier issue.

How to Save Money & Time

Sort your load before you leave. Separate your recycling and green waste and you’ll pay nothing at the recycling areas — the $5 gate fee only hits landfill loads.

Dodge the midday rush. Pimpama’s busiest window is 10am to 2pm, so go earlier or later to skip the queue.

Check it’s accepted first. Pimpama takes eWaste, whitegoods, lounges, paint, empty gas bottles, cooking oil and motor oil — but not general waste yet. A 30-second check saves a wasted trip.

Other Ways to Handle It

General waste right now. Until the upgrade is done, take general household rubbish to Helensvale or Jacobs Well.

Free recycling drop-off. Pimpama’s colour-coded Recycle Street bays take batteries, paint, gas bottles, motor oil and e-waste for free — we covered this in a past issue.

Donate what’s still good. Usable furniture and household goods can go to Lifeline, Salvos or Vinnies. Call ahead first to check they can take your items.

A Few Things Most People Don’t Know

Pimpama already takes empty gas bottles (up to 9.5kg), cooking oil and motor oil (up to 20 litres each) — all free. Most people don’t realise it.

Household hazardous waste like pool chlorine, herbicides and oven cleaners can go there too. This is stuff that should never go in your kerbside bin.

The centre is open every single day, 7am to 4:50pm, except Good Friday and Christmas Day. You can also drop off untreated timber and palings for free.

Where Junk Gents Comes In

Not everyone can fit a fridge or a couch in the car, and not everyone wants to make two trips to two different tips. That’s the gap we fill — we load it, sort it and take it to the right place so you don’t have to.
